Victoria University, University of Technology Sydney, University of South Australia and Queensland University of Technology offer a number of courses for people looking to study within the field of ERP and SAP in particular. As a specialist SAP recruiter, I field a number of regular queries from people wanting to diversify or transition into a career in SAP. The challenge we face is that clients tend to come to us when they want highly skilled professionals ready to go from day one, therefore, we aren’t really in a position to be able to place those who don’t already come highly skilled and proficient in SAP.
So what can you do if you want to move into SAP?
We asked several SAP professionals and this was their advice for those starting a career in SAP?
Andree Leidenfrost – Architect & Strategy Executive
- As a developer, do not think ABAP is dead – it remains important and very viable. However, do get an understanding of languages like SQLscript, JavaScipt and maybe R which are all close to the SAP ecosystem and, for breadth, also look at languages like Apple’s Swift and Google’s Go. Understanding data models are more important than ever.
- Understand what people are trying to achieve using solutions you are involved in building or improving – learn about processes.
- Optimise how you interact and collaborate with others – especially across organisational and area of expertise boundaries – to maximise the benefits you bring to the table – learn about Agile, Lean and Design Thinking
Pieter Peeters – SAP Development Manager
- Make sure you always work with and are open to the new technologies introduced by SAP
- Actively participate in the Online SAP communities like SCN there is so much knowledge shared out there
- SAP is a massive integrated system, do not underestimate its complexity
Vivien Fletcher – SAP Business Analyst
- Be open to learning in SAP
- Don’t be put off by the German language
- Ask lots of questions and understand what you are expecting the system to do
Precision Sourcing recently ran the Australian SAP Talent Market Survey (link to blog) and from this, we discovered a number of insights with one of the most compelling being that 70% of SAP resources in Australia come with 10+ years’ experience. The SAP talent market is, therefore, ageing and lacking an influx of new talent.
With SAP the most dominant ERP technology in Australia across federal and state government as well as prevalent in the private sector we, therefore, face a talent shortage challenge.
